2004 Nevada Arts Council Fellow, Cameron Crain, directed A Single Woman.
Crain also performed the role of Everyman, rendering cameos of such luminaries as Franklin Roosevelt, John Kennedy, Harry
Truman, Fiorello LaGuardia, Carrie Chapman Catt, Alice Paul and Coretta Scott King, as well as dozens of nameless characters from small children to
sharecroppers to journalists.
Jeanmarie Simpson plays Rankin, in a distinct, lively portrait that takes
us from Rankin's childhood in 1880's
Montana
,
to her last television interview in 1972. Deliciously political,
occasionally chilling, ironic and idiosyncratic, A Single Woman illuminates
the role of the individual in the American legislative process with a
whimsical amalgamation of storytelling, high-powered discourse and
communion.
A Single Woman premiered at the Barkley Theatre of the
Oats
Park Art
Center
in Fallon on
February 7, 2004. From February 13 through 28th, the production ran at
Sacramento
's
California Stage and toured for more than 250 public and private performances through November 5th of 2006.
A Single Woman is a Nevada Shakespeare Company production, supported
by Sierra Interfaith Action for Peace, First Methodist Church of Reno and
the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada (PLAN). The development of A
Single Woman was supported by grants from the
Nevada
the Arts Council and the Living History Centre, Greenbrae
California
.
"Wow! A Single Woman is a
truly compelling piece of theater that brings Jeannette Rankin's vibrant
personality and passionate opposition to war to life. It couldn't be more timely... I am really pleased to be able to support
this wonderful effort... It's fabulous. " -- Anita Doyle, Jeannette
